It's a wonderful time of year, the holidays. From the snowy winter streets to the gifts being given and received, it's a joyous occasion for celebrating. So what better way to celebrate than an awesome holiday-themed game? This is where Holiday Express comes in. So get yourself a nice cup of cocoa, put on your good socks, and fire up that computer. We've got some trains to load.
Tetris With A Twist
Holiday Express takes the widely loved Tetris gameplay and puts its own festive spin on it. In each level, you must fill one or more train cars with colored blocks, taking care to fit them in there just right. You can rotate them to your heart's content as you find a way to squeeze them all together. With each horizontal row you complete, the blocks disappear and part of an underlying picture is revealed. The pieces range in shape and size, presenting you with an adequate challenge when trying to make them all fit.
At the bottom of the screen you have a conveyor belt that contains all of your pieces. They will come in from the right and scroll to the left, and if you don't use them fast enough, they will fill up and you will lose the level. If you're given a piece that you can't possibly make use of, you may drop it in the "gift return," but a penalty may be applied. In the bottom left corner of the screen, you will find the "singles," with are tiny blocks that are useful for filling small gaps that you may have left in the car. You only get a limited number of these per level, though, so be careful how often you use them.
The Power is Yours!
Every so often you will receive a gamepiece that features a powerup. To activate the powerup, simply pick up the piece and use it in the car. Here are only some of the powerups:
- Multiplier Powerups: Depending on what number the powerup contains, you will recieve either double, triple, or quadruple points!
- Row Filler: When a row filler is placed, it will fill any empty spaces in the row in which it is placed.
- Bombs: Bomb powerups will blow up several pieces on the conveyor belt when placed in the car. Just make sure that you don't plan to use any of those pieces!
Fast-Paced Action!
There are two game modes in Holiday Express: Snowy and Flurry. Snowy is your typical game mode where you try to get the best times that you can. Flurry is a little less forgiving. In Flurry, you must fill all of the train cars in the given time limit. This provides for a tense, fast-paced game that is sure to be lots of fun!
Anyone looking for a good puzzle game to sink their teeth into will be more then satisfied with this one. It takes a classic formula and successfully revitalizes it for a new generation. Happy Holidays and have fun!
